FixPix Many of the applications one might install to view,
produce, or edit picture type files (extensions jpg, gif, bmp and others) have
installation programs that switch Window’s file associations so that double
clicking one of these files in Windows Explorer will cause the new program to
open the picture file rather than the default or previously selected graphics
application. It’s easy enough to return
to the old associations but not so easy to repair the collateral damage caused
by these installations. Typically, one
loses icon settings and the ability to view thumbnail versions of these
files. FixPix uses “INF” type script
files to remove all settings in the Windows registry that might be mangled by
these applications and writes back the default settings. Be certain to look at the ReadMe.txt file
before running and confirm that you have Internet Explorer in the usual
location before running FixPix.inf or FixPix2.inf.
FixPix.inf This version repairs associations for jpeg, gif, bmp
and all their subtype files on a Win 95 or Win 98 PC. The download is a compressed folder, Fld7,
containing FixPix.inf and ReadMe.txt.
FixPix2.inf This version is the same as FixPix.inf but it also
repairs associations on TIF and other less common picture file types. The download is a compressed folder, Fld8,
containing FixPix2.inf and ReadMe.txt
FixPixME.inf Win ME uses shimgvw.dll modules run by rundll.exe
which is different than Win 98 which uses Internet Explorer to open and view
picture files. This is what displays and
the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. You
can run the other FixPix programs on Win ME (or Win XP) without causing
problems but you may not have the full compliment of features available with
shimgvw.dll. This version of FixPix is
the best choice for repairing a WinME system and one is best off using a
restore point to repair Win XP. The
download is a compressed folder, Fld9, containing FixPixME.inf and ReadMe.txt.
